TECH Clean California single family heat pump HVAC and heat pump water heater incentives are now available.

Water heater rewards programs

The TECH Clean California program requires customers of Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E), Southern California Edison (SCE), and San Diego Community Power (Community Power) to apply to a water heater rewards program in addition to a demand response program and time-of-use rate plan. By participating in a water heater rewards program, you can pay lower rates to heat your water, and you’ll also earn rewards.

What is a water heater rewards program and how does it work?

Water heater rewards programs turn your heat pump water heater into a smart device, heating your water during times of day when electricity prices are lower and power from renewable energy sources is abundant. That’s called load shifting. You’ll have hot water whenever you need it, without paying the highest prices for electricity.

There are currently three water heater rewards programs available to California residential utility customers:

  1. SmartShift Rewards (for customers in SCE territory)
  2. WatterSaver (for customers in PG&E territory)
  3. Smart Home Flex (for customers of San Diego Community Power)

San Diego Community Power is a community-driven clean energy provider for the San Diego region. Community Power customers are also SDG&E customers. To verify if you are a Community Power customer, review the “Summary of Current Charges” section on page one of your SDG&E bill. Below this section, the bill will state, "Your electric energy is provided by SAN DIEGO COMMUNITY POWER", if you are enrolled in Community Power service.

When you complete enrollment, you’ll get a $50 enrollment bonus, plus rewards for every month you successfully participate.

Why does this matter?

By participating in a rewards program and shifting your energy use, you’re helping to keep California’s energy supply cleaner and more reliable. Making small shifts to when electricity is used helps even out the demand on the electric grid which can help avoid power outages and take advantage of electricity generated from renewable sources like solar and wind, which are abundant during the day.
